If an impairment remains after your treatment ends, you can claim disability benefit. COMWEL assigns a grade from 1 to 14: grades 1–3 are paid as an annuity, grades 8–14 as a lump sum, and grades 4–7 are your choice. A single grade changes the amount a great deal, so when and where you have the disability examination — and what evidence you file with it — shapes the result. Waiting until treatment is over to look into this is too late.
There is an order to it. ① Get treatment first. ② Check whether the hospital is designated under the work-injury insurance scheme. ③ Write down how the accident happened while your memory is fresh. ④ Get contact details for any witnesses. ⑤ Submit the medical care benefit application. Don't wait for the company to handle it — the person who files a work-injury claim is the injured worker.
Everything is calculated from your average wage. Medical costs are covered by COMWEL, and for the period you cannot work you receive 70% of your average wage as temporary disability benefit. If lasting effects remain after treatment, disability benefit is added according to your grade. You can get a rough figure from the calculator above.
An approval decision does not trigger payment automatically. You have to submit a separate claim for each type of benefit, and it takes time from claim to payment. Temporary disability benefit is usually claimed in instalments across the treatment period. If you don't claim, the approval stands but no money is paid.
It varies by case, but one to three months is typical. Accidents with a clear sequence of events are decided relatively quickly. Claims that turn on the link between work and illness — herniated discs, rotator cuff tears, overwork, occupational cancer — take longer because they go before the occupational disease adjudication committee. Delays usually come from an unclear account of the accident, thin initial medical records, or a slow response when COMWEL asks for more documents. A long wait does not mean a rejection is coming.
